I came to Madrid questioning whether I could find good Asian food. Be it Thai, Chinese, Filipino (which I am), or Japanese. I scoured blogs for good recommendations and followed suggestions on the Auxiliares de conversación en Madrid Facebook page.
The recommendations led me to Maiia Thai on C/ Princesa and Siam on C/ San Bernardino. The two restaurants are fairly close to each other (about 5 minutes walking) making it the perfect pair to compete.
Let’s start with Siam.
The restaurant itself had a great ambiance, subtle incense and light music that made the restaurant relaxing. The service was a bit slow, as it can be in Spain.
The Menú del día cost me 11, 60 euros.
I got 2 egg rolls, the red chicken curry, a water, and a small cup of strawberry ice cream. The egg rolls were okay, not the best I’ve had. The red curry reminded me of many Thai places I’ve eaten in Chicago. I would say the best part was the curry.
My friend got the Pad Thai and Thai Basil Beef. The Pad Thai was mediocre and the beef dish was alright. Nothing spectacular considering how many good reviews it has on Yelp!
In comparison, Maiia Thai was phenomenal.
This restaurant is amazing. I still dream about eating there. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, the food presentation much nicer than Siam. If you like Thai food, you must go here.
Make a reservation online to get 30% off your order. You must order two plates to get the discount, drinks and dessert not included. (Or go for the menú del día.)
I spent 12, 50 euros for an order of the veggie egg rolls and green curry. If you like spicy food, the green curry was the kind of good spicy that stays with you the whole meal. My friend ordered the chicken satay and an order of the veggie udon. Her dishes were also amazing, especially the sauce for the chicken satay.
I left full and with leftovers for the next day! The extra euro was definitely worth it for better quality Thai.
Maiia Thai might be the best Thai restaurant I’ve eaten at, not just in Madrid.
What do you think? Know a restaurant that could beat Maiia Thai? Let me know.
